When you decide to downsize, you’re not just choosing a smaller home—you’re embracing a new chapter. But for many, the idea of leaving behind familiar surroundings and lifelong friends can be intimidating. The good news is that starting fresh in a new community can be one of the most enriching experiences of your life.
The key to building connections is to start small and stay open. When you move into your new neighborhood, look for opportunities to engage with those around you. A friendly hello to a neighbor walking their dog or attending a local event can open the door to new relationships. One of my clients recently moved to a retirement-friendly community and made her first friend simply by chatting at the mailbox. That small conversation turned into a weekly walking group!
Your interests and passions can also guide you toward your new “village.” Love gardening? Look for a local horticultural club or a community garden. Enjoy creative arts? Check out local workshops or galleries that host meetups. Ventura County is full of opportunities to connect, whether it’s through beach cleanups, farmer’s markets, or social groups for downsizers.
While it can be hard to leave behind the comfort of your old network, remember that the friendships you build in your new home will bring fresh energy and excitement to your life. If you’re feeling unsure about where to start, I’d be happy to share ideas based on what I’ve seen others do successfully. Finding your new “village” is part of the joy of starting over, and you never know what wonderful people are waiting to welcome you.
